Write an essay (suggested length of 6 pages) in which you do the following:
A. Explain what a standard form of a language is and what dialects and creoles are.
1. Students who speak English as a first language may speak a variety that is very different from the Standard American English used in school. Discuss what difficulties or limitations students may encounter in terms of receiving assistance from support personnel because they identify English as their first language.
B. Identify at least two legitimate dialects or creoles spoken by students in classrooms (e.g., Chicano English, Indian English, Nigerian English, Philippine English, Singaporean English, Caribbean Creole, African American vernacular English, Hawaiian Creole, etc.).
C. Discuss specific features of each identified dialect or Creole, including similarities and differences to Standard American English.
1. Discuss how these similarities and differences affect further learning in Standard American English, especially in writing.
2. Discuss possible ways in which you could address or overcome any of the problems presented by the similarities and differences.
D. Identify at least five resources that describe specific linguistic traits of Standard American English and the identified language dialects and/or creoles. Describe the information that each resource provides for a teacher who wants to know more about Standard American English and the identified dialects or creoles.
Note: Include a list of these resources in APA format.
E. Identify at least two resources for each identified dialect or creole that can be incorporated into the classroom to help students develop competence in Standard American English and the identified dialects.
1. Explain how these resources will help students understand the value of and gain access to using Standard American English while also acknowledging the value of the identified dialect(s) or creole(s).
F. When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.
