Description Podcasts have become a popular new media form with the advent of on-line communication and portable digital devices. One can find podcasts on a myriad of topics, including education and professional development. Some podcasts are better than others in terms of their engagement and entertainment value, but also their accuracy. Learning to understand and assess their arguments is an important skill to develop. Your task is to find a podcast episode about a teacher education/professional development topic and write a review of it. This writing assignment is similar to an argumentative essay, but contains some structural differences. Read the instructions below and follow the suggested structure to help you write your review. STEP ONE: Podcast Selection Find a podcast series that covers an educational/professional development topic, then select an episode. Depending how long the podcast series has existed, there could be anywhere between 30 and 200 podcasts. Choose a podcast that is relevant to your professional teaching goals. Some podcasts are tailed to particular grade levels or content areas. You can podcasts to select by checking out the “Education Podcast Network” (EPN) which includes 27 different podcasts for teachers – including more specialized/niche types – that you can access here: http://www.edupodcastnetwork.com/p/showsonepn.html Here are some recommended podcasts that may or may not appear on the EPN list: “The Cult of Pedagogy” with Jennifer Gonzalez https://www.cultofpedagogy.com/pod/ “Teachers on Fire” https://teachersonfire.net “the Google Teacher Tribe podcast” with Matt Miller and Kasey Bell https://googleteachertribe.com “Teaching Keating” with Weston and Molly Kieschnick https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/teaching-keating-with-weston-and-molly-kieschnick/id1096116254?mt=2 “Flipped Learning Worldwide” https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/flipped-learning-worldwide/id646787432?mt=2 “The Creative Classroom” with John Spencer http://www.spencerauthor.com/podcast/ Angela Watson’s “Truth for Teachers” podcast https://thecornerstoneforteachers.com/truth-for-teachers-podcast/ STEP TWO: Listen, (potentially relisten), Understand, and Extend Develop a summary of the podcast’s overall thesis and its supporting points. Employ note-taking and summary skills focused on your ability to teach another teacher about the content presented. This summary/notes should include scope, main points, supporting example, and key lines. Your goal is not only to personally understand the content from the podcast, but to determine how to best present the content to a colleague. STEP THREE: Writing, Reflecting, and Sharing with a Colleague Your culminating activity is to sharing your learning both in writing and also plan for sharing it orally with a colleague. Use the following structure (at a minimum) to organize and write your podcast review each section below. Introduction: begin with why you selected this podcast and this specific episode, what hook did the “author” use, background information (broad topic, specific podcast in 2-3 sentences), outline of your arguments (thesis: your overall position or opinion of the podcast, your assessment points) Summary: summarize the podcast’s arguments and some of its evidence; include some of its content but focus on summarizing its overall arguments. Assessment: what are your reasons or arguments for your overall position about the content in the podcast? Write about one paragraph for each of your supporting reasons or arguments. In each, offer evidence to support your judgements: this will be a mix of examples from the podcast and research from your outside sources. Aim for 2 to 3 reasons in this section. In this section, also include your thoughts on professional learning in this fashion. Have you ever listened to podcasts before? Either way, have you listed to podcasts for learning in the past? Planning to share with a colleague: restate your thesis and reasons; end with a closing thought, significance, broader importance, lesson to take away from the podcast and your assessment of it overall.
