(i) Consider the ideas/images of the Dark Continent, the Yellow Peril/Model Minority, and the Dangerous/Noble Savage. While these different ideas relate to different groups of people (and their different respective histories), discuss what common elements, assumptions, or dynamics they might have underlying. Do these ideas that we see in popular culture (either of the past or the present) express some similar general ways of perceiving or imagining difference? (ii) What does it mean to examine race/racism in terms of “discourse”? Drawing on course materials, discuss how the idea of race has developed historically, and some of the different understandings the idea of race has had across the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. What shifts does the idea of the “new racism” represent for discourses of race and racism in the present day?
