cardiac pacemakers and insulin pumps

When a person visits a hospital or a medical canter, they have the expectation that their information is private and that it will be protected at all times. The hospital or healthcare providers, on the other hand, have a responsibility and duty of care to their patients that their personal information is private and cannot be accessed by other people without their knowledge. It is necessary for hospitals to secure their medical devices from malicious cyber-attacks and hackers because medical devices store patient medical data. Therefore, more data is stolen because of the medical devices that are connected to the internet, hospital networks, and Wi-Fi. Malicious cyber-attack issues affect some of the medical devices that we use, and that can lead to receiving wrong medication or patient harm (Senouf & Burri .2009).

Over the recent years, there has been an upscale in the installation of artificial computerized pacemakers into human beings. This had a lot of benefits towards the artificial regulation of a heartbeat to the patients with heart problems. Despite the revolution brought in the health care system, it has equally attracted cybercriminals who most of the time hack the pacemakers through the wireless connectivity feature enabled in these devices. The main reason for hacking is for the sole purpose of obtaining patient information for sale. This paper seeks to establish the extent to which wireless hacking on the pacemakers has gone to the healthcare sector (Johnson, 2016).

Problem Statement

Quality healthcare is one of the major strengths for any medical institution across the world. The health information derived from the patient matters a lot when it comes to offering medical treatment, but of importance is to ensure the data is well stored and protected from counterfeiters. The data storage processes and mechanisms have been slowly monitored and addressed in the medical sector. This has led to poor health services delivered to the patients and medical services seekers. Medical institutions have in the recent past received a lot of criticisms concerning the safety of medical information leading to poor health services. This has been attributed by non-performance by some medical practitioners, reasons for major drug description, and poor health services.it is against this understanding that the research study was developed to establish the effect of data protection on the delivery of quality healthcare services (Senouf & Burri .2009).

Objective of the Study

The general objective of this study is to determine how data protection in medical sector affects the delivery of quality healthcare services.

The specific objectives are:

  1. To narrow down the importance of securing medical devices from hacker attacks is a big concern; therefore by identifying the different ways to which healthcare providers and hospital can secure their patients information.
  2. Cyber professionals in hospitals must develop methods to improve the medical devices and their privacy through the use of reliable, secure networks and encryptions.
  3. To determine encryptions that can be used by hospitals to improve data security.

I have selected to work with Dr. Michelle Liu, and I expect to carry out the research under her the mentorship. The professor will be of great help to the success of this project because she is accessible and available to guide me thought out my research project and can provide me with advice to obtain substantial results.
