The instructions for the assignment appear below, and your response should be posted in the “Writing Assignment #1” Discussion Forum on Blackboard. Your response should be about 2-3 paragraphs long, and is due at 5:00 PM on Monday, June 4th. Have fun with this – the topic is interesting.
The use of hallucinogenic drugs (e.g., LSD) for the treatment of various mental disorders has been debated for quite some time. Go on-line and find out what the latest research is telling us about the potential effectiveness of these drugs for treating certain conditions such as chronic depression. When you do so, you will find a mixed bag of articles, some arguing that hallucinogens may represent a breakthrough treatment for mental disorders, and others offering a very negative or skeptical view. Feel free to acknowledge the skeptical views in your response, but because this assignment is meant to be linked to our discussion of neurons and the brain, make sure to:
Choose a particular mental disorder (such as depression), and provide a non-technical description (in your own words) of what researchers believe is happening in the brains of individuals who are suffering from that disorder;and,
Choose a particular hallucinogen (such as LSD), and provide a non-technical description (in your own words) of what researchers believe is happening in the brain when an individual who is suffering from a mental disorder ingests such a substance. In other words, why do researchers believe that hallucinogens might be effective for treating mental disorders?
